THE PROTOTYPE: 510 SPADINA

A LAST OF TRUE TORONTO LTD.™ Infrastructure Story™

Before St. Clair could fight for its corridor, Spadina had to prove it could exist. The 510 is the prototype — the first modern right-of-way streetcar Toronto built in the post-industrial era, the experiment that made midtown’s restoration possible.

1878–1948 — The First Line

Spadina’s story begins with horsecar service in 1878, later folded into the Belt Line loop that circled the old city. By 1923, the TTC established a standalone Spadina route, running double-ended cars through the growing downtown. In 1948, service ended. The tracks were torn up. Buses replaced streetcars. For nearly fifty years, Spadina went silent.

1973–1990 — The Revival

After the Streetcars for Toronto campaign saved the system from extinction, planners began imagining a new kind of corridor — one that treated transit as civic design. The first test came on the waterfront: 604 Harbourfront LRT, opened in 1990, proving that dedicated lanes could coexist with public space.

1997 — The Prototype

On July 27, 1997, the 510 Spadina opened from Spadina Station to Union. It was Toronto’s first full right-of-way streetcar since the 1910s — landscaped medians, modern stops, and a rhythm that felt like a city rediscovering its own infrastructure. The 510 became the model for every corridor that followed.

2014–2016 — The Modernization

Spadina was the first route fully converted to accessible Flexity Outlook streetcars. It set the standard for platform design, signal priority, and reliability. Night service returned as 310 Spadina, closing the loop between history and continuity.

Legacy — The Prototype Lives

The 510 proved that Toronto could rebuild its streetcar system for the 21st century. Without Spadina, there would be no St. Clair restoration, no midtown spine, no civic precedent for fighting back. It remains the prototype — the line that taught Toronto how to build again.
