Before the CN Tower became Toronto’s icon, it was a pilgrimage site for the workers who built it. Every day, hundreds of civilians ascended into the sky — creating the city’s vertical myth.

This archive honors them.

Section I — The Pilgrims

The workers included:

— Concrete pourers— Steel riggers — Crane operators— Welders — Electricians— Surveyors — Climbers

They came from:

— Scarborough— Etobicoke— North York — Mississauga— Hamilton— Oshawa

Their commute was a ritual.

Section II — The Ascent

Workers climbed:

  • Unfinished concrete
  • Exposed steel
  • Temporary ladders
  • Open-air platforms

They ascended through:

  • Storms
  • Freezing winds
  • Summer heat
  • Night shifts

Their ascent created Toronto’s spine.

Section III — The Ritual of Labor

Each day:

  • They left home
  • Approached the rising pillar
  • Ascended into the sky
  • Contributed to the city’s myth

This was Toronto’s first resonance ritual.
